What Associations and Journals do you subscribe to?

Hi everyone!

I am considering joining a couple of associations (AWHONN and ILCA). I am a new grad Antepartum/Postpartum RN with a strong interest in breastfeeding education.

What Associations do you belong to and what Journals do you subscribe to? Any suggestions on Assoc/Journals for my area?

Is joining AWHONN the only way to get the JOGNN journal?

Any advise on these topics will be appreciated!!

I joined NANN last year when I first became a nurse b/c I started out as a NICU nurse but then switched to Mother/Baby and just recently joined AWHONN so I'm a member of both, but have not gotten my first JOGGN yet.

PS - I'm not sure on the breastfeeding education that will come from being in the groups but Im' sure there will be a good bit. I've been told going to LLL meetings can be helpful too. I also get a lot of input from mommies in my local mommies group that I belong to.

I'm a member of AWHONN and have found it to be really helpful and a great resource in projects for work. I do believe that joining is the only way to subscribe to JOGNN short of going to a university library & reading one. AWHONN has a lot of breastfeeding resources as well.

And remember, the dues you pay to join whatever association to benefit you in your job are tax deductible. :)

Really? Darnit! I will be claiming that next year! I wish I had known I would have claimed my NANN fee's for last year. BUt at least I know that I can claim this years AWHONN fees. How about our license fees? Can we claim that too?

How often does the journal come out? Like I said I joined about a month or so ago and haven't gotten one of those yet.

I believe you can count your licensure renewal fee as tax deductible, since it is for the sole purpose of being able to do your job. Just make sure you keep whatever receipts you get so you can prove it should you ever be audited. Might want to check with an accountant to be sure but I believe it's true. I've counted mine on my taxes.

JOGNN comes out monthly. It took me a couple months to get my first issue too, so don't take it personally. Also, they publish 'Nursing for Women's Health' monthly which is still clinical but not quite as dry. I like it as a resource for teaching. You get an automatic subscription to both when you join AWHONN. :w00t:
