staffing

by valene

we do 500 del/yr-does it seem safe if there are 0 babies in the nursery and no patients on the pp floor to allow 1RN to staff the labor room while the other RN is floating outside the unit on med/surg? there is a nursing assistant, but if the patient is on Pitocin and active, what would the legal ramifications be if the RN had to deal with a precipitous delivery, cord prolapse, etc. while she waits for the other RN? Have you been in this situation, is it OK? is it safe?

Dont even think about it. Talk about a problem when your cord prolapses. Dont let them do this to you. I worked in the same kind of hosp. 500 or so births a yr. and this was done to me frequently. I left 5 yrs ago and I work in the next town over where I always feel safe. Good luck...but get out if this is really happening to you.

p.s. if you have to wonder if it is safe..it's not.

Default Re: staffing
Our floor's policy is that there MUST be 2 RNs and 1 med tech on the floor at all times.
