Red reflex and erythro: getting babe to open eyes

I am new to OB. Are there any tips to getting babe to open their eyes to check red-reflex? I really don't like trying to pry eyes open but when I do have to open them myself I do it gently, don't want to hurt them...some have some strong eyes lids! Any tips?

We don't check the red reflex, just give the eye meds. That's not considered part of our assessment. If you do want to check, use your hand to shade the eyes, more chance of the baby opening them. Dry hands and a dry baby work better, too.

I would try to do the assessment with the lights dimmed or off.
