PIH question

  1. I am a New Grad, RN starting on a postpartum unit. My question is...why do we assess for RUQ pain in a pt. with PIH? Another new grad told me it was for Liver involvement but that is pretty vague and I dont seem to be grasping the concept. If anyone could give me more specific info..I would really apprecitate it. Thanks

You are looking to see if the pt has developed HELLP syndrome (hemolysis of red blood cells, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets). That is the 'liver involvement' that your friend is talking about.

right upper quadrant pain is an ominous sigh for the severely preeclamptic patient. The major concern is hepatic capsular enlargement and subsequent rupture. Hepatic rupture is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgical intervention.
