I have a little over 1 year experience in L&D and rarely was trained doing the Leopold maneuvers...JW how it is at other facilities....

Am I'm in trouble that at my place we don't practice it???

We're expected to do and document them at each Triage visit and encouraged to do them in labour when appropriate to help determine positioning. Helps to know where your anterior shoulder is in case of dystocia as well.

We are also ecouraged to preform leopolds at triage and when admitting a patient. It helps determine where exactly to put the doppler because you can feel the fetal back. We do not have to document that it was preformed, but it is expected.

Since you have one year of experience now, it's time you took the AWHONN Intermediate fetal monitoring course. Included is instruction and practice in doing Leopold's. You can check for a course near you at the AWHONN website.

We don't routinely do Leopold's other than to try to figure out if the baby is vertex and where we think FHT's will be. We have several rolling ultrasounds for the doctors to get a quick eye on the baby when they first get to the unit.
