Our policy is children under 12 have to be accompanied by an adult to supervise them....We tell people,if the only adult is the support person and the child/children need to leave the room, the support person will need to leave with the child/children, people usually manage to find someone to come supervise the child/children.
There is no accounting for what constitutes supervision though, we had some "adult supervised" boys set off the fire alarm in the middle of the night a while back.

After reading some of these responses, I'm thanking my lucky stars that NO ONE is allowed into the OR!!! Family members have to stay behind in pre-op and be shown the way to the waiting area.
There's enough for nurses to worry about without someone implying that you're also a FREE sitter service. People just amaze me sometimes.

When I first seen the title of this thread I thought it was about US babysitting our patients. At least at my work that is all I feel that I do.........babysit grown adults...who wont do anything for themselves.
Then there are the confused climbers..........I did not go to school for 4 years to sit at someones bedside and say repeatedly:
"Dont pull on that"...."Leave that alone."...."Stay in bed please."
"If you pull that out..It will hurt." ....."No, you are not at home. You are in the hospital."......"No, I am not your wife and please dont call me a XXXXX."
