new job in OB/GYN

by cjchan

I have been an RN for 14 years. The entire time I have worked in ophthalmology, an ambulatory surgical center. I am wanting a new field of practice and have applied for an RN OB/GYN position at our local hospital. I will need training, not as much as a new nurse, but almost. My question, do those of you who work in OB/GYN enjoy your field and is the training such that I would have had to have experience in the hospital to learn this new position? I am a fast learning and would really enjoy the change. Thanks for your comments

I was a med/surg womens unit RN for 11 yrs before going to OB. I felt like a new nurse all over again. It was very intimidating for awhile. Since then, I have learned alot and love my job. Just keep in mind- that it does take time to become comfortable.

Most big hospitals have internships in Jan and June. In my experience, they would much rather have an experienced nurse than a new grad. This would provide you with formal OB training. I would look into something like this.
