I graduated last May and was losing all hope in finding a job, much less my dream job in L&D. But, after a year of trying, I finally have an interview on Tuesday for L&D! I want this job so badly and feel this will be my one and only shot. I am going in with no experience and I feel like maternity in school was so long ago! Any advice on what I can spend the next three days prepping on? I assume they will ask me scenario-type questions but I have no idea what type of questions they would be. Any advice for this newbie? I have been searching other similar threads but figure I could use any new info. Thank so much!!

Good luck to you! I have no idea what sorts of things they'll ask you but just be sure tell them how eager you are to learn and how passionate you are about labor and delivery. The interviews I have been in on usually focus more on your professional and personal skills. What are your assets? What are your weaknesses? Describe a difficult situation you've been in? I would google some interview pointers and focus more on your interpersonal skills than clinical situations. They know you don't have L&D experience other than school, so I doubt they expecting you to have a vast amount of maternal-child knowledge. Don't fret it, they'll teach you! Good luck!

Labor Diva, thank you so much for your response, it was really encouraging!

Hi K10RN*2012~

I've seen a couple of your other posts on here and I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS on getting the interview!!! I hope it goes well for you and you're able to get the position. Let us know how it goes.

Many, many months later I was called for a second interview last week and was offered the position yesterday! It seems surreal and too good to be true; I can't believe it finally happened! It took 15 months since I passed NCLEX and I was giving up hope this day would ever come.

wow, why did they wait so long from the first to second interview?

When I went for the first interview it ended up being for postpartum, which was still fine with me, but soon after they decided to start a new grad group for L&D. I guess they just had to wait on budget or approval or something? I'm not really sure. There are three of us that will be training in L&D. I'm still so darn excited!

I graduated in May 2012 as well, with hopes of landing on a L&D floor asap, and I just started last week! SOOOO excited! Congrats!!

I totally, totally understand this. I graduated from my LPN-BSN program in July, and was putting out applications in June...nothing. I stayed at my current job and applied, applied, applied EVERYWHERE and got the no, no....no you need RN experience....blah blah blah. I put in an app at a rural hospital a few hours away from me and have an interview for L&D on Monday! I am so excited!

How is the job going?! Do you love it??

I love the job and the people I work with! The learning curve is steep; there is so much to learn in this specialty. Just when I think I am starting to feel comfortable with something, I start back at the bottom with something new. But my co-workers are fantastic and the job itself is pretty amazing. I am definitely where I was meant to be. I have many, many days that I walk out feeling like an idiot but I try and keep it in perspective. I've only been there a few months and I know the first year is the hardest. Good luck with your interview!

@Calinurse, I graduated last May and currently on a progressive care unit. I plan on applying to the Woman's hospital that is a part of my hospital's system in a few months (my one year on the unit). I'm interested in their Mother/baby unit. To be honest, I think I'm going to be very nervous to interview there because although I have experience on the floor, I have zero experience in that specialty. My OB clinical was many moons ago now and I don't remember anything. Do you recommend books I can at least start reviewing now and how has the transition been for you?

Hi calinurse4!! I know your interview was years ago but do you remember how it went? What they asked?

I have an interview for l&d position and wanted to see how I can be better prepared.

thanks!
