New Grad In L & D

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Hello, I'll be starting a new grad position in L & D soon, I have hospital orientation coming up on may 12th. I just wanted to know how many of you started out as a new grad in L & D How did you Like it? Any words of advice? and is there anything I need to buy, as far as a certain stethoscope or any tools?

Thank you

No special tools, but I would recommend books on the following topics:

EFM interpretation (current terminology)

Perinatal nursing

Breastfeeding

AWHONN will have these resources - but that is where I'd start. It's nice to be able to come home after a shift and look up conditions or procedures that happened that day.

I started as a new grad last year. It's a very steep learning curve, that's for sure! I still ask questions like crazy. I had a 4 month orientation and have been on my own for 2 months. I still get really nervous when things start to go bad but I always have a lot of back up. The experienced nurses keep an eye on us newbies! I love the job and it's never boring. All I ever use is my stethoscope, pens, scissors, and tape. Good luck!

Thanks for this thread. I am also a new grad and just go hired for an L&D position in NYC. I am super grateful for the opportunity and so excited to be joining so many awesome nurses in this work. I will definitely be brushing up on my text books before orientation starts. Reading the forum has been pretty eye opening as well.

Me too, this will be exciting, keep me updated on how things go with you and what you learn. My hospital will be sending to a bootcamp for new grad nurses in L & D coming up in July I'm excited about it, oh and I was given a book to study EFM. Have you joined awhonn yet?
