LPNs in OB - do they have them where you work?

Do they have LPNs in your labor and delivery? I know LPNs that are in postpartum - what about L&D or surgical LD?

There are no LPNs in our hospital system. It consists of 5 hospitals.

At our facility, LPNs only work post partum if they work the unit. When the LPNs leave this facility, they are being replaced by RNs. The LPNs that remain there are pulled quite often throughout the hospital anywhere from med surg to CDU, rehab, tele and so on.

I know of one LPN in our birthing department (antepartum, L&D, postpartum), but she is working as a PCA. I believe LPNs were phased out seven or eight years ago.

We are also phasing out LPNs. We have one that has been on our unit since 1974 (wow!) but she is the only one. None in L&D.

We had 2 LPNs that have been with us over 20 years only working in mother/baby, but have both lost their jobs last year. They would have been able to stay if they were willing to work towards their RN, but neither wanted to.

So, to answer your question, no. No LPNs in our childbirth center at all.

We have 2 LPN's working mother/baby, but after they retire, they will be replaced with RN's only. We have hired LPN's that have previously been OB techs...with a contract that they will return to RN school within a year or be transferred. No LPN's in L&D.

Per the AWHONN position statements, it is outside the scope for an LPN to work in L&D caring for a laboring patient. Only RNs can work in labor and delivery.

We do not have LPN's in L&D. Interestingly, I had a LPN as my labor nurse on the night shift while in labor and she was the main reason why I wanted to get into labor and delivery. I admired her from the moment I met her and she was a true inspiration.
