We have a LVN on my unit but she can only do post-postpartum.

We have one LVN (LPN) in our L&D unit. She has been here 7 years or so and is "grandfathered" in. She refuses to take any classes to work towards her RN. We (the RN's) on the unit have to sign off on every assessment she does, also, she cannot circulate for sections, so if her labor patient winds up being a c-section, one of us has to drop our pt and circulate for her. It's not a good situation at all. I STRONGLY feel that LVN's should NOT work in Labor and Delivery....period!

We are one big (small) unit. We have a LVN school in the city I work so most of our nurses in the hospital are LVNs and will probably never be phased out until the nursing school starts to graduate RNs instead of LVNs. Our staff is about 1/2 RNs and 1/2 LVNs but only RNs do L&D. It is a staffing nightmare when one of the 2 RNs scheduled for the night calls out, plenty of LVNs but can't do L&D.

There are no LPNs in L&D or PP at the hospital I work at. The hospital is magnet status, so everyone besides a couple RNs who have been there 20-some years have a BSN.

We used to have one LPN on L&D. After we delivered the pt. they were handed off to the LPN for the 2 hour recovery before transferring to Postpartum. But LPN's are being phased out of the hospital. They have 3 years to get their RN or they will lose their job.

we have one, who has been there for a very long time. she mostly works in teh OB OR (we do our own c/sections), but takes some fresh postpartum patients, or labor patients, with a RN as her buddy to help her. she doesn't do the monitor strips. I don't think we'd hire a LPN now, though. I've been there a few years, and she's the only one

there are some LPN's on mother/baby, but not a lot.

magnet status does not automatically equal more BSNs. WE are magnet and have a mix of both ADNs and BSNs.

Oh, my mistake, sorry. I thought to become magnet status there had to be a certain ratio of BSN & ADN... (having more BSN) I should have researched that, instead of just going by what I've read/heard. Thanks for the info, now I'm curious to look more into it!
