Which hospital do you work? (if you want to share) [withheld for privacy reasons]

How many Births do you do each year? somewhere in the 1500-2000 range.

How many RNs do you staff on day shift including charge? Ideally, 7. Not always the case.

How Many RNs do you staff on Night shift including charge? Ideally, 7. Usually never the case.

Do you have a second nurse present during delivery to care for baby? Yes, unless we're super busy.

If yes, how long does the nurse stay in the room after a lady partsl delivery? This entirely depends on how the baby is doing. Sometimes as short as 10 minutes, sometimes as long as an hour.

In a C/S: Does the second RN stay in the OR until the case is completed? If we are fortunate enough to have a 2nd RN, yes.

What unit does this RN come from? L&D, usually the charge nurse.

If the baby nurse at delivery is from L&D: are they reserved to be baby nurse? (do they remain without a patient assignment?) Not always. Sometimes our 2nd nurse has antepartum patients on the floor as well.

Which hospital do you work? (if you want to share). Not sharing for privacy reasons.

How many Births do you do each year? Somewhere between 4000 and 5000 a year.

How many RNs do you staff on day shift including charge? I think day shifts core is 13 or 14.

How Many RNs do you staff on Night shift including charge? 11 or 12.

Do you have a second nurse present during delivery to care for baby? Yes.

If yes, how long does the nurse stay in the room after a lady partsl delivery? 1.5 to 2 hours, unless we are busy. Then that nurse only stays for around 1 hour.

In a C/S: Does the second RN stay in the OR until the case is completed? Our second nurse is the baby nurse. Prior to the c/s, the nurse helps prep the patient while the primary nurse starts the charting and counting. Once the baby is delivered and nicu clears the baby, the secondary nurse takes over care of the baby. Starts vitals and skin to skin. Prior to closure of the c/s, the baby is taken to the pacu where mom will be after her c/s.

At my previous job, the baby would go to the nursery until after the c/s is complete and the nursery nurse would bring baby to the pacu. Also, there was not a second labor nurse in the c/s unless it is an emergency c/s.

What unit does this RN come from? (NICU, L&D, PSTP, etc…) Labor and delivery.

If the baby nurse at delivery is from L&D: are they reserved to be baby nurse? No. Any nurse who is available will be the baby nurse.

Reviewing L&D Staffing, please fill out the following. THANK

How many Births do you do each year? 900

How many RNs do you staff on day shift including charge? 4-5

How Many RNs do you staff on Night shift including charge? 2-4

Do you have a second nurse present during delivery to care for baby? Yes. NRP says that there should be two NRP qualified nurses present at all deliveries.

If yes, how long does the nurse stay in the room after a lady partsl delivery? Depends on how long it takes to stabilize he baby, how busy the department is at the time, and the individual nurses involved. If my baby is vigorous, I want it skin to skin and prefer to take care of the couplet by myself, so I'll send the baby nurse out after the 5 min Apgar. Most nurses will stay 20-30 min, then return every 30 min to do vitals on the baby and do the bath shortly before transfer to PP.

In a C/S: Does the second RN stay in the OR until the case is completed? The second RN stays in the

OR as long as the baby is there, because policy is that the circulating nurse can only have one patient. If staffing allows, the scond nurse stays and oversees skin to skin bonding time.

What unit does this RN come from? (NICU, L&D, PSTP, etc…) L&D unless a problem is anticipated, then NICU nurse is present.

If the baby nurse at delivery is from L&D: are they reserved to be baby nurse? (do they remain without a patient assignment?). No, whoever is available. We don't usually have enough deliveries each day to assign a baby catcher.
