Specialties Ob/Gyn

I'm so excited, they just called and I got the OB extern position!! It's the area I want to work at the hospital I want to work at!! I've been applying for extern positions for four months now without any luck, but that's okay, 'cause now I've got the area I want. What's great is that they really like you to extern there, then work as a new grad and then as an RN, so it's basically a road into OB that would've been hard to get otherwise! So thanks for all of your support, I'm sure I'll be a regular on here now!!

Congrats!!! I also am externing and wanted an OB position, but there were none available so I'm in Ortho/observation. Good luck and I hope you get a great preceptor because that makes all the difference in the world! Have a great new year!

hey,,,what is an EXTERN NURSE????

Specializes in Med-Surg/Oncology/Telemetry/ICU.

It's where you have a preceptor, but you can act as the nurse with their supervision. It's a really great was to help transition from student to nurse!!;)

P.S. Hospitals call them different things too, for example, I'm an SNI (student nurse intern) and there are other names as well, but as far as I know, they're the same thing. Your status in the nursing program determines what you're allowed to do on the floor.

Specializes in L&D,Lactation.

We do this at my hospital but I have never heard of interviewing for one and we call it a preceptorship rather than externship. My boss or one of the instructors just asks one of us if we will do it.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

BTW, I used to live in Gilbert, AZ some years ago. I bet it's changed a lot since then.

GOOD LUCK in your NEW POSITION!
