I didn't know I was pregnant?

Alright guys!

I am a new L&D Nurse.. I try not to watch TV shows like the one mentioned above but this is the one I can watch for hours and be amazed! Haha! Has anyone out there had any patients that DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE PREGNANT? Do you believe them! Please share your stories!

Specializes in OB (with a history of cardiac).

With my son, we were not NOT trying...so to speak. I was 2 weeks late, and I'm never late- I attributed this to stress, but honestly, I had no stress in my life at that point. I was denying it because I didn't want to get my hopes up or anything about being pregnant. I had taken these ovulation tests- the pee on a stick kind, maybe 2-3 days prior to my husband insisting I take the "real" test. See...I was LATE, and I'm NEVER late. I wondered where I was in my cycle (HMMMM!) had I ovulated yet? OH, look at that, the ovulation tests were positive...all 4 of them I took. I must be ovulating now...2 weeks after my period was due. Conveniently I ignored the interesting finding of by bust size going from a 32A to a (seemingly) 36A in a weeks time, and that laying on my brand new giant magical boobies was pretty painful.

So finally my husband insisted I take the test. I insisted I couldn't possibly be pregnant. I didn't feel pregnant. I was just psyching myself into thinking I was. That was it. But I humored my dear husband, and took the test. I covered the digital window with a piece of TP because I knew I would just sit there and stare at it. I got dressed, casually picking stuff up off the floor and then went to the bathroom, ready to see "not pregnant" in the little oval. Imagine my "surprise" when I saw "pregnant" instead. And my "not pregnant" is 3 years old.

With my daughter, we truly WERE NOT trying. She was a surprise. I was a week from graduation from nursing school. I really WASN'T prepared to see "pregnant". Interestingly enough, the day after the positive, the nausea started. And the overwhelming cravings for grape juice! Our little "surprise" (my nursing school graduation present) just turned 1 in January!

My first was a surprise and even though I was sure I was just having the GI bug that our unit manager sent us a letter about, I still tested and surprise, it was positive. My husband asked where the not was :lol2:. We were using BC but everyone knows it's not 100% effective.

I just seriously can't imagine not knowing, I can understand not knowing for several months but not at all? Both my pregnancies were such that I would have been nuts to not know.

I mean even if you think you can't have kids, you should know that sex can result in a baby, however unlikely that can seem so wouldn't you be prudent and take a test.

My kid sister was 14 and had no clue she was pregnant with twins until she went into labor at school and gave birth on the bathroom floor. I was there because i was giving a sex talk that day in her class and i went into the bathroom wondering what was taking her so long. I went in there and she was on the floor pushing a baby out. She was on her last push for the first baby. The second one came in the ambulance. Now Chaston and Lani are two healthy 4 year olds and have a baby brother and one on the way.
