HELP important ob question

  1. Just got a call from my sister. She is 7 wks pregnant. For some reason he decided to do a vag ultra sound. He found the sac and everything intact but no baby. He looked at the ovaries and tubes and cannot find the baby. He does not know what is wrong he says it could be several things one of which he is calling a phantom spontanious abortion. She is very upset they are doing more tests in the a.m. including a beta blood test. This is not my area and I dont know what to tell her. Also she was on trazadone up until pregnancy was confirmed about 2 weeks ago. Can anyone help me help her.

It sounds like it could be a "blighted ovum", which means that the embryo failed to develop after implantation. If so, she will eventually miscarry, or may need to have a D&C. It is important to have an ultrasound and a pelvic exam to rule out an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, as well as a series of beta-hcg levels. In a normal pregnancy, the beta-hcg will double approximately every 3 days. If her beta-hcg rises, but at a slower than normal rate, that could indicate a tubal pregnancy. If it falls from its initial level, that can indicate an impending pregnancy loss. I'm sorry that she's having to go thru this. Best wishes to all.

hi, I'm sorry for what she is going to go through
I also had this happen to me with my first pregnancy. I was not familiar with OBGYN issues at that time and the Ob did not clearly explain to me what's going to happen and why.
Please assure her that it is not her fault, that it is a freak accident of nature and she is most likely going to have a normal pg next time around.
i had a natural miscarriage, very painful, but I was glad to avoid D&C.
She will need lots of support from everyone in the family and just ask them to be sensitive to the issue. Sometimes people say things " it's not like it was a baby anyway '" or " you'll have another baby", they mean well, but it only adds to the greif. For me it was a baby right from the start, even though it didn't develop.

Don't worry, she will be ok.

I agree. A blighted ovum sounds like exactly what is occurring. While the embryo never developed the greiving of a lost pregnancy is still very real. I'm sorry this has happened to her. It should have no effect on her ability to conceive and carry a baby to term in the future.

It sounds like a blighted ovum to me as well. If they found the sac and products of conception then there is no risk that the baby is elsewhere ie. the ovaries. However ,,, at 7 weeks they are almost certain to find a heartbeat and see the baby BUT if she is unsure of her dates MAYBE the baby is as yet too young to be detected. If in further HCG tests the levels do not riseand an US in 2 weeks fails to show growth then it is most certainly a blighted ovum. Either way continue to be supportive to her ... she'll need your shoulder... let us know what happens... good luck...

Blighted ovum sounds like a likely possiblity....either way, it is a loss, sounds like. I had an empty sac during what turned out to be miscarriage myself. I am so sorry for the loss. Oh and if it takes time for people to reply to a post, please don't take it as lack of interest. Sometimes, it takes a day or so before anyone who can help checks the forum. I wish you well. Pls let us know how she does.

This is the first time I have seen your post, but I agree that it sounds like a blighted ovum...I am so sorry...It doesn't mean that she can't get pregnant and deliver a healthy baby next time..
