Gas pain mngmnt

  1. Any suggestions? This always seems to be the top problem our GYN pts face--Sure, we suggest the usual--WALKING, laying on tummy, changing positions, taking supps and stool softeners. We can no longer use hot packs at this hospital and our Aqua-Ks (heating pads) are useless. Thanks for the input!!

At our hospital we use Prune Juice cocktail. Pour Prune Juice into a glass, add Lemon-Lime Cola and heat in microwave. Do this at bed time and give a sleeping pill at the same time. The sleeping pill lets the pt. relax so the cocktail can go to work. This is not 100% but a lot of pt.s say this helps.

You might wish to also check with the dietary department of your hospital and see if they can create a diet that will help elimanate some of the problems. Alot of foods are prone to cause excessive gas in patients. Hopefully they will be able to provide a menu that will not contain these food items.
    Hope this helps...

I OFTEN ENCOUNTER THIS WITH C-SECTIONS AND POST PARTUM TUBALS. ONE OF THE OTHER NURSES SUGGESTED A MIXTURE OF GINGERALE AND HOT TEA. MOST OF THE PATIENTS GET RELIEF FROM THIS (ALONG WITH SOME GOOD OLD AMBULATION!)

On our ward,we have used mint or peppermint tea, which seems to help quite well.

We do pretty much what you mentioned:
    turning (r, back, l)
    ambulation
    K-pads
    simethicone
warm fluids, tea or broth (we never give warm juices or sodas, they are sickingly sweet when hot)
To me the best treatment is ambulation.
