I SEEM TO BE DOING A LOT OF FETAL DEMISES LATELY. WHEN ANESTHESIA IS CALLED FOR EPIDURAL PLACEMENT, HERE LATELY THEY HAVE BEEN PUSHING VERSED PRIOR TO PLACEMENT OF THE EPIDURAL. I WAS WONDERING IF THIS IS STANDARD CARE ELSEWHERE. PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINIONS ABOUT THIS.

It's not standard practice for our doc's to give Versed prior to placing an epidural, but they are very generous with the pain meds (epidural or IV). We have a couple of docs who like to give something to the mom after the baby delivers, to try to help her if she needs it. Fetal demises are tough, and my thoughts are with you!

Versed is probally being used in a misguided effort to lessen the impact of the delivery of a demise. Small amounts can have a relatively LONG amnesic effect. This does not allow the natural grieving process to proceed. Versed is NOT standard practice.
I would suggest an open discusion of your concerns with the OB and anesthesiology services
