I was wondering if anyone knew of any websites, or books that have English to Spanish translations for OB phrases. We have translators available, but I would like a reference to use until the translator arrives. We have recently seen a 32 wk preg lady who does not speak a word of English and her husbands is very limited. Any help is greatly appreciated.

This website might be helpful. It is from Duke University.

I know there is a book Spanish for healtcare providers that might be useful. I used to live in Spain and now live where there are alot of spanish speakers. Mine is a bit rusty but if you tell me some phrases you want to say I will try to help. I may not say it grammatically correct but I can get my point across.

Oh that site is great!!! Thanks so much. The main thing with this patient is general assessment questions, along with H&P questions. She is unable to understand anything we say. The MD cant even get her to answer if she has seen a doc. She refuses to let him examine her. She did allow for an ultrasound to be done... thats the only way we know she is 32 wks.

There are many English/Spanish medical dictionaries.

I suggest one that has a coil binding that you can flip through quickly. Make sure it is arranged into sections (so you can easily find the OB bits). Once you have it, put tape flags or post-its on the pages you need.

I found mine on Ebay, it's out of print now, but I know there are others. Amazon.com is probably a good resource for you if you want new; if you want cheap, try ebay.

Is she letting the nurses examine her? Some women who are from Spanish speaking countries are still very modest with their body (in my experience). Especially rural areas. I lived in a small town in Spain and it was so backwards. She may not want a male dr.
