D5&1/3 for ketones in urine?

Does anyone still dip urine, and give mothers D5&1/3 for positive ketones?

We've been doing that, but I just got back from a conference where we are told this is not only unnecessary because ketone findings are normal, but can also result in hyper/hypoglycemic baby.

I'd be interested in knowing what everyone else is doing.

I guess it really depends on what the level of ketones are. Typically if they are trace to 1+, we hydrate PO or if there is N/V involved, IV with LR. If they are large, there is generally an order to alternate D5LR with LR. I can't say I have ever used D5 1/3 for ketones.

I have never heard of doing that, so I guess we don't! I've been at three hospitals.
