blood draws through IV catheter

  1. does anyone have problems with hemolysis when drawing bloods off a IV catheter using a luer-adapter? We never had this problem before, now 40% are redraws because of hemolysis.

Are you referring to blood draws immediately after IV starts? If so, try using an 18 gauge needle to transfer the blood from the syringe to the tubes.

We use the vacutainer adapter directly to hub. Have you checked with the lab?

Mary, some of the new lock for iv's have a special function that is like a reverse vacum. You might try removing that and drawing directy from the iv or extension tubing, than replacing. I don't know about you, but lab ALWAYS says it is hemolyzed! Good luck-quincy
