Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
Is it specifically that you don't think the professors are helpful to you? Do you feel you're not learning what you need to be a successful nurse? I'm just trying to get a sense of what's making everyone so miserable beyond the fact that there's a sh*tload of work that they're strict about, because with Nursing School I've never heard of anyone saying they thought it was a breeze.

Well first registration for last semester and this semester was a disaster, everyone had to wait in line for atleast 2 hrs to register! and then re-register a third time. Some of our classes dont match our clinicals, learning one thing in class and something completetly different in clinical because the school didnt get correct hospital unit for clinical, exams every wk, almost twice weekly, some prof have major attitude with students, failed full-time students by mistake then made them go part-time, the list goes on, it's sad, I really don't want to scare you, there are ppl doing ok but there are ppl doing not ok, but most are dissappointed with the program.

Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
Hmmm..the clinical/class learning confusion is scary because it's nothing you can personally do to fix it. The idea of clinicals make me nervous in general, as I'm sure they can with all new students.
When I registered recently, I registered for everything except for 190, because there was a mistake in the computer and it was automatically putting me into a Saturday class, when they're were clearly Tuesdays available. She said she would call me when the problem had been straightened out and she had registered me for Tuesday. Surprisingly she did get back to me the next day.
I appreciate the info, if anything I know I'll be at least a bit more prepared for what's to come..and that i may have to be a bit neurotic to make sure everything is taken care of while I'm a student there.

Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
Take it from a LIU alum. You will absolutely hate the school while going there but will realize once you have graduated how prepared you are. Prospective and current students must realize that there is no "hand holding" in this program. You have to want to learn and be willing to make sacrifices to accommodate your studies. If you are at a point in your life where you can't focus solely on your studies, then now is not the time to go to nursing school. Period. It is true that each semester approximately 100-200 students are admitted and by the end there is only 40-50 students left. There is a lot of work involved in any nursing program and only a short amount of time to get through it and not many people can get tolerate the related stress. But even with all that, it is still possible to graduate from LIU. So don't be discouraged: just remember that everything in your life is basically put on hold for 4 semesters while doing your nursing courses.

Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
Don't let anyone fool u, this school has got to b the worst nursing school in NY state. They care soo much about their own and the pass rate its ridiculous. Its all about LIU not about the student while we r paying the 30K a year. I am second degree student and this made me realize what a good school my last school was. The teachers r mostly new becuz I here all the teachers leave when they realize how the students are treated. They give a hard ass med math exam that they only give you 3 tries each semester to get a 100% in. If you dont pass you have to sit out for a whole semester. Most of the teachers that they assign to help you prepare for the med math test can't even do the problems. They give a test every week rotating classes. Some of the teachers are so bad they might as well be online classes. Registration is a mess every semester with us standing outside the registration offices for hours just to get a wknd schedule. The tests are so hard that most teachers can't get them right when you ask them for their opinion. The highest grades are usually kin the low 80s. Keep in mind 76.45 is passing. The test always seem like they are made to trick you. The info that we r tested on usually hardly like the material they ask us to read/study. They change things during the semester when its convenient to them w/out our acknowledgment. Even the few people who are doing well in the program are fed up with LIU nursing. Anyone who goes there will regret it I know I did. If you dont believe ask anyone who is in this program now.The way I see it anyone who puts their mind to it and studies hard should pass the Nclex w/out relying on a school. The joke in the school is LIU has gave more people bad debt and has put more people in debt then the current economy becuz of the amount of people they failed out. Imagine leaving a school wit 30-45K worth of school debt without any degree. SCARY. I made a bad choice but I just hope I make it thru. Pray 4 me. P.S. Dont go to this school or I will be saying I told u so

Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
I can totally relate to your frustrations Had2, because that is exactly how I felt while I was in the program. But I'm telling you, once you graduate from the school and have an opportunity to compare yourself to other new grads from other schools, you will see a difference. Yes, tuition is amazingly expensive. But everyone knows this when applying to and attending LIU. That was actually my driving force. I refused to leave that school owing 40K in loans and having nothing to show for it. And just to let you know, most RN programs are similar in that they don't make it easy.

Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
You could relate but u cant anymore. I am in the new curriculum started Fall of '09. I will try to get more people who are there now to post so you guys can really see LIU's true colors. I saw the med math exams they used to give you guys. Cake. The med maths we get now they are still teaching seniors to do some of the problems. There are seniors who have take the med math exam 14 times and haven't passed it. Will there be a big difference between LIU nursing students and Columbia, NYU, or even a CUNY program? I highly doubt it. The only difference might be the amount of care & compassion one shows to their patient & that really can't be learned. Either you love your job or you don't. I definately love and appreciate the little bit of clinical experience that we get [another big problem with that program (too much theory, not enough practical)]. Even if there is a so called difference at the end of the day, we will still be working in the same place with the same job. I have heard plenty of nurses at my clinical rotation in the Hospitals say that LIU nurses are book smart but those from the associate RN programs who spend more time in the hospital are much better prepared for actually working and take of running, while we need time to catch up. The tuition is one thing but not showing me where my money is going, is my main concern. They might as well make the classes online the way the lectures are done and how some professor read straight from the slides. The way most of the exams are made with 2 right answers per question. Ridiculous. Its almost as if they wait to get the scantrons in then say ok the one that most people picked will be the incorrect one. If no one gets higher than an 85 in approximately 12 of the 20 exams we take all semester there is a problem. Either its with the teaching or the test making or maybe even both. My thing is there is too many things the school does to try to fail you or just not allow you to progress. They hardly ever do things to try to help you or teach you instead. If they would spend as much time teaching Nclex test taking skills instead of make a new or harder obstacle to fail people, then maybe their Nclex pass rate would stay as high as they want it to be. Laguardia Community College has a higher Nclex score than LIU for the past 3 consecutive years & Community College is approximately 1/4 the price of LIU. For the $ that we pay they just need to focus on teaching the students instead of focusing on one of the many obstacles that they have put in place to hold us back. This in turn will pay more dividends for them because their Nclex pass rate would increase, thus making more students want to attend their program. It will also benefit us in that we will get a better education that we feel we deserve and in turn will be better, more knowledgable nurses.

Re: what have you heard about LIU nursing program?
Well, its obvious there is a difference of opinions (which each of us are entitled to). And while it certainly has been a few years since I've graduated, I do have a friend currently attending the school who has complained about professors and med math exams (just as you are and like I did when I was in school) but still states she would recommend the school to other people wanting to become nurses. According to her, she learned a lot. I'm sorry your experience is not/has not been the same but I do wish you the best of luck in your studies.
