Just Got accepted for Pre-Nursing at Hunter. I NEED HELP!!!

Hi everyone,

I just got accepted to Hunter College pre nursing program. I already have a Degree in something else, BUT HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY OF THE SCIENCE PRE -REQUISITE. Basicly, I have to take all the Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Psychology, Anatomy, Physiology etc, in the fall and spring before applying to the nursing program. I have not been in college since 2000 and it's kind of scary to go back and take all these strong classes all together. So my question is, SHOULD I START STUDYING NOW ON MY OWN AND BE AHEAD OF THE GAME? HOW DIFFICULT ARE THESE CLASSES? I HAVE A 3.10 GPA AND NEED TO GET A'S IN ALL MY PRE-REQUISITES TO RAISE MY OVERALL GPA. I wil be working during my pre nursing (I have a son). PLEASE HELP!!

I got my ba from Hunter and took alot of science classes there. Please heed my advice and get your syllabus early, start studying early, and go to class prepared to review-not learn. Hunter is tough when it comes to science and very competitive. Make a plan and stick to it and you'll be fine. Study early and study smart. You can get an idea about your class schedule from Esims. Good luck!

Wow, I'm in the exact same situation! I have a degree already, no science prereqs and it's been a while since I was in school. I looked at the courses I need and when they are offered and in order for me to apply for the nursing part of the program in Spring 2010, I need to take the first CHEM prerequisite course over the summer! Otherwise I won't be able to take Micro and A&P2 in the spring. I will advise you to look at all the courses you need and plan everything out ahead of time. I decided to take the summer Chem course at another school, since Hunter cancelled it for their summer semester.

I was actually looking at the class schedule for Fall and it seems like the 2nd Chem course (CHEM120) is not on the list! Sent an email to Registrar because it makes no sense (A&P 1 is it's co-requisite and is offered). Hopefully it will get added because otherwise I'm at a loss.

I am not even sure I will stick with Hunter in the end. I will also try to apply to accelerated programs at Pace, NYU and SUNY Downstate. That way I can be done faster and hearing that Hunter is next to impossible to get in (for the nursing part), it's good not to put all my eggs in one basket.

I'm trying to give it my all. My GPA is 3.4 and hopefully will get over 3.5 by the time I'm done with the prerequisites.

I'm actually going to Hunter tomorrow to find out about financial loans and may stop by the Chem department to sort out the Fall schedule question. Freaking me out! And getting information out of Hunter is like pulling teeth.

Anyway, GL. I'm a mom too, so I know it will be a hard road for us, but hopefully we will get to our ultimate goal

Hey jlan79,

What school are you planning to take the CHM class? I went to Hunter today, and even though I have been accepted, my information is not in the system yet, so I can't really do anything right now (need to wait for the official letter in the mail with instructions). I told the guy at admissions, that I need to take at least two classes over the summer so I can apply for the nursing program in Spring 2010. He basically said that as soon as I get in the system, i need to contact student services and get a special permit to take those clases over the summer. Of course this can take somewhere between one or two weeks and as far as I know, registration for the summer ends this Friday. Help! Thanks.

No dont start studying now. Classes are so different so you may start studying something you dont need, hence waste your time.

I'm taking Chem at Nassau Community College. I work during the week and they had a weekend course. Which classes did they tell you to take in the summer? I'm only taking one because everything else I can take in the fall/spring. I think you only need a special permit (E-Permit) if you will take the summer courses at a CUNY school. I already registered at Nassau CC because I didn't need a permit. I will just get a transcript at the end of summer and submit it to Hunter.

Btw, did you get an acceptance email from Hunter? It had a link where you could accept their acceptance and I guess that's the point when they enter your info into the system. They will also start evaluating your transcript then (and only then).

I will call Maria Mendoza at the nursing department tomorrow, to ask her about my situation. I know I got accepted to Hunter, trough the admissions automated phone system. They did tell me that I should receive a letter of acceptance in about one to two weeks. Let's see what happens. Anyway, I was also thinking about applying to either NYU (15 months program or Columbia nursing (BS/MS program). Columbia sounds better for me since they offer the CRNA program (I really want to become a nurse anesthetist) It's more money but a faster way to earn my nursing degree.

I seriously considered Columbia for that reason, but I went to their open house and it seems like the school will be so demanding I would literally not see my kids. And it will take me longer to get my prerequisites ready. Plus, I just can't afford the tuition for the whole program. I am hoping to get my RN and then work a bit and get the hospital to pitch in for my MSN (Suny Downstate also has a nurse anesthetist program).

It's great that you know exactly what you want to do (crna) so you won't waste time. If Colombia offers what you want on a faster track then you don't necessarily need to go to hunter for 3.5 years (prereqs and bsn). I know it's alot of money, but maybe you could find an accelerated Bsn elsewhere like downstate, CNR, Concordia, stonybrook, Pace, knock it out and apply in for Colombia masters. So between the prereqs and Bsn you'll spend 2-2.5 years. Or just go to Colombia for the BSN and CRNA, it will be expensive but you'll make that money back sooner-and have to pay it back sooner, but atleast you won't waste time getting to your dream. Good luck!
