Columbia ETP 2010

Hi there,

I am also applying to this program.

My GPA (undergrad) is 3.84, my pre-req GPA is 4.0 (I'm taking Micro this semester, though)...

GRE... well, I did 1290. I was a little disappointed, but since I had surgery and A & P finals two days earlier, I guess it is acceptable.

I haven't begun the essays yet- I don't want to jump into it and submit something sub-par.

Experience- I've worked in clinical research for two years. I happen to work for Columbia right now, so I hope that works in my favor :-).

What about you???? Where else are you applying? Are you in NYC right now???

yes caff i have a q, i think i need to do all but 2 of the pre-requisites...where did you do your pre-requisites ..which class room setting?

how difficult is this course to get on? What's the standard of students?

i did my prereqs in a private college, but other students did in public colleges, online, whatever got them good grades.
It's not difficult to get in if you have the grades and life experience to back you up. The first semester is VERY difficult. several people dropped out. The next semester gets alittle more manageable. Most students are very smart, driven and intelligent. Everyone works hard to do well.

i'm applying to columbia etp 2010, as well as johns hopkins, emory, penn, and possibly samuel merritt. i'm applying for the fnp program. took the gre last month, scored a 1360 (650V, 710Q) with a 4.0 in the writing. my undergrad gpa is 3.49, and i should have a 3.75-4.0 in my prereqs (depending on micro).

worried about the cost of this program, excited about the city and the university.

I had written off Columbia because of the expense, but now that I've heard they're giving huge scholarships I've decided to apply. I have enough of the pre-reqs completed (except the sciences) to gain entrance for 2010, so I'm going to apply. My GPA in undergrad was 3.4 and I have a 4.0 in my pre-reqs, but I haven't taken the GREs - they'll be hard, since I'm a lousy standardized test taker.

Anyway, can anyone tell us what in particular Columbia admissions people look for in applicants. Also, does everyone receive $32k or is it up to $32k? Lastly, how is the program? Do you recommend it? My colleague's daughter attended and hated it and did her NP program at another university. Plusses? Minuses?

My name's Liz. I am also applying to Columbia's ETP program. I'm really excited to be applying to the program and hope to get in... but if I do, I think my deciding factor will be whether I can really pick up everything and leave California (I've been in SoCal all my life!)

My GPA from college was a 3.1 but I scored a 1410 on my GREs and anticipate getting a 4.0 in my prereqs (i'm finishing up Microbiology by December)...I've also been working as a research assistant at a hospital for about a year and a half. Hopefully all of that will make up for the crummy GPA...

Where are you other applicants from? I will be visiting NYC to visit the campus in the middle of November (the weekend before applications are due) to see if I can really see myself there for several years... yikes! The other programs I am applying to are... University of San Diego (MEPN), UCLA (MECN) and Johns Hopkins [just to see if I get in... ha!]

I am also applying to Columbia. I have spoken to many grads and although I have heard mixed things the NPs I know who attended the program liked it. I have to take the GRE this Saturday and I am sort of feeling unprepared for it! My college GPA is 3.5 and I have a MSW with a 4.0 GPA. I currently work in a hospital as a pediatric social worker.

I heard at the information session that nearly 99% of students get that $30k scholarship!

just breathe!

for me, the verbal section was the trickiest part, though the computer adaptive testing made me feel like i was getting every math question wrong too. those analogies are tough, and the worse is when you can clearly remember studying a word, but have forgotten its definition.

oh. and write LONG, competent essays. i think that may have been my downfall as I don't think I wrote enough on the analytical writing section.
