College of Mount Saint Vincet vs. College of New Rochelle or NYU-Spring 2010

Hi,

After reading Allnurses.com for the past several months during applications, I finally joined! I wanted to know if anybody else applied to the second degree programs at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, College of New Rochelle and NYU - starting Spring 2010?

I received an acceptance letter from CMSV a few weeks ago (Yiippppeeee!!!!) and am still waiting on CNR and NYU. My plan is to finish the pre-reqs and join the nursing program - regular track. I have a few pre-reqs done from my past BA and a few classes while working in London, UK, for the past two years.

Anybody else? I would love to hear thoughts on these three schools and other people's decision making process.

Any future study buddies out there?

Good luck to all the future NY student-nurses out there!

Cheers,
Alison

I was also accepted to CMSV, still waiting to hear from NYU and LIU though. Are you going to be a second degree student as well?

Hi JPena8 -

Great to hear from you! I will be a second degree student. I have to take a few more pre-reqs though - specifically, nutrition, anatomy and physiology and some schools may make me take developmental psychology (I already took one psych class as an undergrad and it seems it may count at some schools). I graduated in 2003 with my first degree - in anthropology and women's studies.

I called NYU, CNR and LIU (applied there too) Thursday and all the schools said letters will be sent out the first few weeks in November. I think NYU is my top choice. I really do like CNR's philosophy on holistic nursing education and their long history, but I am not sure about the commute! I live in the financial district in Manhattan and think that the subway to Grand Central, then Metro North to New Rochelle will get old fast! Also, I really like that CMSV has a separate school in Manhattan for non-traditional students. All the mixed reviews of LIU -Brooklyn, really have left a bad taste in my mouth about the school.

How about you? Do you have any thoughts on the schools?

Cheers,
Alison

Same here. NYU is my top, but CMSV's small classes make it more appealing, I read around that NYU's courses consist of 100+ lecture courses, so that makes me hesitant about it. I also need to complete a few pre-req's I believe Nutrition and BioChem. I have to send in my reply to CMSV by the 15th though, so I hope that I get letters before then...

I know! It is more than a bit frustrating that student the enrollment place holder for CMSV overlaps with NYU and the other schools. Oh well, I think am going to reply the week before due just in case. I would hate to lose my place at CMSV then get rejected from NYU.

I heard the same thing about NYU's class sizes. I friend of mine (resident MD cardiologist) worked with lots of NYU student nurses and said they all liked it and were great nurses. My other friend's Dad was the head pathologist at St. Vincent Hospital for years and said that the nurses coming out of CMSV were always experienced and good at their jobs. None of it makes the decision making any easier....

Hi All,
I just stumbled upon this post as I was preparing to write something nearly identical.

In short:
I applied to CMSV and NYU for Spring '10, both as a 2nd degree transfer student.
In both cases I would need to take the science pre-reqs (i.e. anatomy, chem, bio)
I will pay for school with loans.
I've been accepted to CMSV but have yet to hear from NYU.

My questions:
- If I get accepted into NYU, is it worth the additional expense?
- Are clinicals similar to internships in that they can lead to potential jobs? (NYU may have better clinical placement??)
- In the acceptance package I received from CMSV, there was a note stating: clinical courses have a wait list and I am not guaranteed to start them Sept '10. If they are full, I will receive priority for Sept '11. This is a deal breaker for me, I want to start and finish asap and I'm not sure what they expect someone to do for the first year. Anyone have any information on this?

Thanks,
Eric
