Hello all,

I have been wanting to apply to nursing school forever (well.....really since 2006 when I left my first school). I began my college education at the most expensive school in NYC. Anyways I left after some time due to $$$$/family issues and then transferred to a SUNY. While I was there I became very sick to the point I was making three-five trips a day to the ER and was unable to work. I left my SUNY in order to become closer to a free place live and get better. I am now all healthy and set to attend a 4-yr CUNY in the fall as a History major.
When I attended the SUNY:
AP I: B
AP II: C
Gen Chem:B-
Orgo/Biochem:C
Stats: C+
Gen Bio II: B
Micro: B+
and a C and A in both Psychs. I know the grades are not great but I was as close to death's doors as I think I will be unless I really pass this life (believe it or not.....I still did better than a lot of the nursing students in the SUNY school). I am better now and plan to take over the AP's again and Orgo/Chem.
My cum GPA is a 3.0 and if I get better grades in those 3 science I think that will help in the whole admin process.

I just wanted to know if you think I have a chance I getting in. I even have professors from my second school willing to give my recommendations and explain my withdrawals/and less than stellar average
I know it says the whole 2.75 thing does that mean I can automatically get in or that is just their minimum requirement and that they usually pick those with a 3.5+?
I was planning on graduating and then go onto a second degree program but I am an independent student. For those who don't know sometimes being independent sometimes means getting the s***t-end of the financial aid stick and on top of that I am way below the poverty line and have no dependents (Thank God). So I was thinking I should just get my BSN during this first round while I still qualify for Pell, SEOG,and anything else and since I am still under 30. If I get in I will still have 3 yrs left in my 20s to have fun after graduation.
Anyways I just wanted to ask the questions:

1) For those who transferred to LIU: what was your GPA when you did transfer ( in particular your science grades)? and what was the finaid they gave you?
2) For transfer students w/o a previous bachelors or associate degree: did you have to complete all those extra courses like philosophy and extra English ( I took two already from my 1st school)---I am setting up my schedule at CUNY in a way that would beneficial to me if I do get into LIU
2) Is it possible to get scholarships as a Continuing student? e.g. get a 3.5+ or above your first semester and then you get a little gift from the FinAID office
3) I read a lost of horror stories on here already about 50%+ failure rates. Is is really that bad? or is that just because one does not study enough?
4) I read somewhere on here that PDAs come with the program is that true? (not really important but just wanted to know)
5) How was then entrance HESI?
6) If I get into the Fall 2010 cohort (my goal) am I guaranteed my spot? eg. I have read they accept like 100+ a semester.... is there enough room for everyone or do some get moved to later semesters? (I hope to avoid so I am going to apply for Fall 2010 after I get my better grades -- going by faith the size of a mustard seed-- at the end of the Fall 2009 semester. Getting A's which is feasible -just relearning old material- will raise my science GPA to a 3.18 (and that is with an C from APII which I plan to take over in the Spring 2010 semester).
7) I would just like your take on the school and how the workload is, the $$$ spent on books ( just for future reference)
8) Extra question: I dream on becoming a NNP or a PNP who specializes in Oncology. I know that those areas might not necessarily be in clinicals but I know at some schools a student can take an independent course and study a particular field of practice. Is that possible @ LIU?

I am so psyched to go back to school. LIU is like the only school ( in this area) that does not average prerequisites if repeated(according to the lady I talked in the Nursing dept) and does not have nosebleed $$$$$ so this is not only my first choice but my last hope. I am finally healthy after being ill for 2.5 yrs and I am ready to roll out the 4.0.
