US Nurse to practice in UK

World UK

Hello Fellow Nurses!!

I getting the process started to work in the United Kingdom for a short 3 month contract. I'm hoping to have the process completed by the end of Summer 2018. I'm just looking to chat with nurses who live and work UK or nurses who have done what I am trying to accomplish. Just looking for some pearls of knowledge and some experiences you can share that might aid in this process and provide me with a little more knowledge about similarities and differences between the nursing cultures.

Thanks!!

Is it worth doing three months after all the money that is spent going through the process?

I agree. 3 months is a short amount of time for all the hoops. I'm working on my UK license as well. I plan to stay a year. I'm looking for info/advice as well. Have not taken my Test of Competence yet, but looking to do it soon. I've already spent close to $600 and not nearly finished with the application.

Well, I can't be away longer than 3 months. I am willing to do more contracts, however I would have to space them out. I cannot be away longer than 3 months due to home obligations.

Usually foreign trained nurses have to work several months as a CNA while waiting for their registration to be completed. You are unlikely to get away with just three months as a CNA, many do 12 to 18 months, depending on their experience, their ability to communicate in English, and their country of origin.

You are not going to walk into an RN contract without completing this probation first.

Unless its some backstreet nursing home paying squat and barely scraping through its licence renewal each year.

It will take longer than three months and won't be very cost effective, to be honest. And you need to visit the UK to take the test of competence.

I would question whether its worth it. I'm British and I trained in the States, and I don't ever want to work in my own country.
