Leaving the UK for greener pastures

World UK

Published

I am interested in learning why UK nurses are seeking employment overseas--it can be anywhere, although I am especially interested in those coming to the US. It is for an article I am writing, and I do not need to use your names. But I would like to hear your reasons for seeking employment outside of the UK, and if you have already left the UK--if your new overseas job has proven satisfactory/been a disaster/you can't wait to leave/are very happy, etc.

Thanks!

SueIP,

How is Wales in regards to the nursing shortage ? I have heard of a lot of English residents moving to Wales to get away from the rat-race. A lot of people have moved into the countryside so that they can also live off the land and live the "good life". Wales is so underrated and overshadowed by the other British countries so any information you can share will be great. :)

Hi Bizzymum919

Wales is pretty much the same as the rest of the UK to nurse shortage...well it has been where I work anyway until recently...my Boss has looked into employing nurses from Overseas because of the shortage. Wales is a nice place to live - being a country girl at heart I love the openness of it all :wink2: :wink2:

Something that got my attention today. i am not sure how it is done in different countries,Do bus drivers earn more money than nurses in your country. here in london they get paid 500.pounds every fortnight, if not weekly i do not make anywhere near that as a qualified nurse. i know they work very hard ,as london is probably one of the most difficult places to drive.but surely we ought to be getting the same shouldn't we .i guess this might have something to do with very few nurses in london and most hospital have permanent agency and bank nurses.

I am working in SICU in NC, I left the UK, in part to satisfy a wish to experience nursing in the USA, in part because I love the country although I recognise the warts and all!!:chuckle The unit I work in is a very tight team with a brilliant nurse manager, I have been nursing 41 years and I have never been easily impressed. The facilities and support are significantly better than the UK. The hospital I work in is very committed to its nurses and nursing. I feel that I am treated with far more respect in my local community than was the case in England.

I am going to work in UCLA.i know it is expensive. but i can not see it being more expensive than london. my contract is 2yrs ,so maybe after 2yrs i might venture out to a different state.

Thanks caramel

Hi, My name is Anna and I am going to work for UCLA too. I am being sponsored for green card and I should get it very soon. What unit are you going to work on? What is your clinical experience like?

i MA FOREIGN trained RN, and I would like to hear some good news from you.

Take care. Anna

Hi

I am writing to you from a TV production company called Ricochet. We are currently producing the fifth series of No Going Back and I am looking for people who are selling up in the UK and moving abroad to start a new business venture. I would love to hear from anyone who is doing something along these lines. Please contact me on [email protected]

myself and my workmates are all here with OGRADY PEYTON, and the majority of us are happy with the agency, they take care of all the paperwork, pay for all the exams and study days to help with passing the n-clex. they pay for all flights to take the exam in america, and for me to relocate. the nurses are from the uk, barbados, poland, south africa, antigua, jamaica and st lucia. we get paid well even although the agency obviously charges the hospital more for us than we get. thats the name of the game, we also get overtime at time and a half.

as a matter of interest to the nurses who are going by themselves....how much are the hospitals paying you? I know it depends on the area that you go to, but the hospital employed nurses where we are get less than the travel nurses.

we sold everything before we came here, our home and business, cars and house contents. we arrived here with 2 suitcases each to begin again.

7 months later we are surviving ....and doing very nicely.

ps..whats your weather like? 84 degrees here today...just been out for dinner at a beach bar, watching the beautiful sunset.
