Leaving the UK for greener pastures

World UK

Published

I am interested in learning why UK nurses are seeking employment overseas--it can be anywhere, although I am especially interested in those coming to the US. It is for an article I am writing, and I do not need to use your names. But I would like to hear your reasons for seeking employment outside of the UK, and if you have already left the UK--if your new overseas job has proven satisfactory/been a disaster/you can't wait to leave/are very happy, etc.

Thanks!

Roxanne

hello, silverdragon102, read that you r on the way to america from uk. I am in same position but at the beginning of the process, can i ask if you went through an agency or did it all yourself....application, visa ect.?

I am not sure which is best, don't want to be ripped off by agency so if you have any advice would be grateful

Hi Gina,

I have done it through a recruiter in the US. She has been so helpful and has pointed me in the right direction but alot of stuff only I could do on my own. It has been a bit hard at time but have had help from someone on this forum who is also going through the same process. If you go through a agency there are no certs that you will get where you want to go. I have found doing it this way I am going where I want to go. You will have to pass the NCLEX and go through CGFNS which is a pain but the end is worth it. You can email or pm me if you want and I might be able to give you more help.

Hi ginaspice,

I like Silverdragon102 am off to the USA - to Florida...I am going with an Agency, which I am really pleased with their performance at the mo! They have helped me with forms etc and guidance and now have a job lined up with them. The downside to going with an Agency is that if you dont like the job and break your contract you have to pay to get out of it (in my case it is about $5000), but I also know someone else who went by herself and she said it was a nightmare of a 2 yr period after passing the NCLEX...it is entirely up to you really but I am pleased with the way things are going for me...PM if you need anymore help :)

thanks for info, thats why i am hesitating about going through agency as i definately want to go to Texas!

How did u contact us recruiters?

Hi, sueip, did'nt know it could take that long doing myself.........maybe am considering going with Peyton O'Grady. i just do not know what they get out off it? do they take a percentage of your salary?

Hi Gina,

I knew someone who went with O'grady Peyton and was disappointed with them and was glad when her contract was up. They do not give any promise of placing you where you want. Also she found she didn't get much overtime because they charged alot.

to find US recruiter you could try contacting some hospitals in Texas yourself via the web, some hospitals have their own recruiters. I found my recruiter because she advertised in the nursing times. I will be going to Phoenix

I started the process approx in July/August and hopefully will be out in Nov. You can start doing the CGFNS CES application now. You can do that online and you will need to send copies to them and arrange to have your transcripts forwarding to them. It is always best to send stuff to them via FedEx,UPS international registered post. You then have a record of sending them stuff. the web site for cgfns is http://www.cgfns.org For some states you cannot sit you NCLEX until you have your CES from cgfns. I was fortunate to go through New York and didn't need it which has sped the process up for me.

If you take it for a different state than where you are going the board can always endorse to that state and just pay a fee.

I know someone else who was disappointed with O'grady Peyton too :o

I started this process in spetember 2002 and I am now waiting for my Visascreen and for my Immigration Papers to be filed - my Agency told me it could take another 12 months at worst...6 months at best..who knows - it is a very long process :angryfire

Why is there such a difference in time period? any tips on how u got your process through so quick?:crying2:

Sometimes it helps if you can get started on some of your stuff in cgfns now. I haven't had any problems with them apart from a delay with my license verification from NMC to cgfns. I know sue had a few problems with cgfns. They do seem to take their time and tend to ignore emails and letters. I was fortunate that I did not need an OK from cgfns before I sat the NCLEX alot of BON's require cgfns input before you can sit nclex. And I know from a few threads from here that from a couple of months time you will need cgfns visa screen for the immigration process. If you look at a few threads from Suzanne4 she has offered some good advice and on the international forum has put together a sticky offering more advice
