Can a cannula be flushed with water for injection?

In practice I have seen nurses flushing cannulas with normal saline and other with water for injection. What is the difference between both?

I dont believe it would be best practice to flush with WFI as there is a different osmolarity to NS, NS being isotonic, and one could compromise the access, especially in those with friable vasculature. I may be wrong but this was what I was lead to believe many years ago and I have never flushed with WFI.
