Teaching ideas for group of Senior Citizens

Nursing Students Student Assist

For my community class we have to come up with a topic for a teaching plan that relates to older adults. We will be teaching this topic to a group of about 20-30 senior citizens. It should be Health/Nursing related, I am looking for some ideas. My classmates and I came up with a few but they were all shut down by our teacher or already discussed by other classmates. Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes! my teaching group is 4 girls and we thought about the idea, but have not mentioned it to our teacher. Mainly because we think that the senior adults would just laugh and giggle at us and because we would not be able to teach the topic seriously.

You could talk about assessing their home environment for fall risks, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise, the importance of having a living will and durable power of attorney for healthcare, adult immunizations, risk for depression and suicide in the elderly, polypharmacy, or s/s of heart attack or stroke and what to do in that situation.

Maybe...however you are nurses and you need to learn how to have these conversation seriously with seniors. Check with your teacher...she might not like it and in a groups setting she may not think it appropriate for seniors.

How about meds and food interactions?

Power of attorney...how to protect assets. Modified exercise for the elderly.

how to keep up with when to take meds, how to store them, issues with OTC meds and RX combined, polypharmacy, knowing what meds are for-----I think you could get really creative and do fun exercies with some of these topics. For instance, a poster with pictures of OTC meds and cautions that need to be matched. Diabetics should watch for sugar content, including sugar alcohols

Importance of advance directives, POA, DNR vs full code etc?
