RN - most pressing issues

  1. I have to do a paper on the most pressing issues today regarding RN's.

I am a 1st year nursing student and having a difficult time narrowing down issues and finding 2 or 3 that are "interesting". Any ideas for my research???

Aiken, L. H., Clarke, S. P., Sloane, D. M., Sochalski, J., & Silber, J. H. (2002). Hospital nurse staffing and patient mortality, nurse burnout, and job dissatisfaction. Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 288(16), 1987-1993.

Look up the above article for a really good idea of how staffing issues affect nurse satisfaction, and thus affects patient outcomes (direct correlation between nurses being dissatisfied and higher mortality rates, etc.).

Anything by Linda Aiken would be good.

Here is a list of her publications. She always researches current nursing issues.

    Hmmmm, my 2 cents worth

Staffing: both nurse retention and staffing with fewer nurses than are needed for the acuity and # of pts

    Lateral violence

    Wages
