not sure...

by paisa

Hi everyone,
I have this question that I'm not too sure the answer to:
A pt had a thyroidectomy and on the incision line you notice that there is hemorrhaging. What is the appropriate action by the nurse?
a)check the airway
b)put pressure on the incision
c)check the BP
Thanks in advance.

Your post caught my eye because I've had two thyroidectomies. I would say the answer is "B". Anytime you have bleeding you put pressure on it immediately to stop it. Then, check the BP. That area of the neck is highly vascular. Thyroidectomy patients are more likely to have airway obstruction from swelling of the surrounding tissues. I had two penrose drains in that were profusely putting out all kinds of drainage as well as a seroma that developed and drained for two weeks after discharge.

Default Re: not sure...
i choose B because it is the only intervention ( based on ur choices ) that is directly into preventing hemorrhage.. choices a and c are more of a general intervention.
