Maternity Nursing

  1. Hello to everyone.
I am a nursing 3rd year nursing student. Working on a paper for maternity nursing. My topic is Cultural Aspects of African American Women in Labor. Can someone please help me with the nursing teaching plan incorporating African American cultural background and aspects of the importance of having insurance, prenatal care, so on.
Thank you. I really appreciate any suggestions. My paper was due yesterday

Does your college offer access to nursing journals like CINAHL or others? I think once you learn about the culture, you can than apply that info into a care plan. What are the family values of African Americans? Who is consider the head of the family, what are their beliefs regarding pregancy and delivery, who will help postpartum, what are their dietary beliefs during and after pregnancy, pain tolerance, family support, etc... You could probably google it if nothing else. Regarding the remaining stuff, insurance, prenatal care, etc... Insurance is an easy one... good insurance offers finacial stability to the family unit because their benefits will help offset the cost and also increases patients to go to prenatal appointments. Prenatal care...that's huge. Do you have a maternity text book? There are many, many benefits to prenatal care. It focus on keeping mom and baby healthy. The do's and don'ts. Keeping appointments, supplements, prenatal screenings, nutrition, expected fetal growth, teratogens. The impact of smoking, ETOH, other drugs, including prescription drugs, etc...

    Good Luck!
