:typingok so my instructor tried to put a 5 hour lecture into 2.5 hours. we were left with NO info on the following 2 questions.

1.ID and decribe the surgical procedures of the spine that are performed to relieve nerve injury.

-she gave a worksheet to fill out w/

-cervical:

>open anterior & open posterior laminectomy w/ fusion

>microsurgical dissection of the disk

-lumbar:

>laminectomy w/ fusion

>micro-discectomy

>percutaneous discetomy

2. discuss the nursing management of pt's following the ID'd health deviation cervical and lumbar disk surgery

what i have found in books and online so far:

simple laminectomy is the removal of the bones and ligaments on the back of the spine, it's an incision made 2 levels above and below the site of cord compression.

but is this r/t nerve injury?

only the compression of the cord or is there other reasons you could have nerve injury, does herniated disk fall into this?

some nursing implication i found were keep BR, assess neuro, HOB flat for first 24 hours, assess extremety function...

sorry it is soo long but i have been looking everywhere for some understanding & it's all pretty brief. any help would be appreciated. thanks
