I'm new...(with a goofy question:-)

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hi there,

I'm new, and really happy to be here--allnurses is such a wonderful resource, and I'm glad to have become a part of this "community" of nurses/pre-nurses/etc.etc.:yeah:. Anyway, here is my question: I just received a schedule for my summer nursing externship, and the schedule uses the letters "D" and "A" in place of shift times. Can someone please clarify this for me? I'm used to thinking in terms of day, evening, and night shift, but this schedule is written a little differently. It's probably something obvious and my brain is just fried from exams this week...anyway, thanks for taking time to answer my question!

Of course, you need to clarify with your new employer precisely what the symbols on the schedule mean. However, I work at a facility that has some people working 8 hour shifts and some working 12 hour shifts. On our schedules, they use D, E, and N for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (8 hour) shifts, and A and P for the 12s (A means 8a-8p, and P means 8p-8a).

Thanks elkpark, that makes perfect sense. I'll have the opportunity to clarify everything in a couple of weeks when orientation begins, but I wanted to have an idea of the schedule beforehand. :nurse:
