How many hours to study in a day?

Hi everyone:

I just got accepted into nursing school. I do have to work while I'm going part-time. I'm trying to make out a good schedule. How many hours a day of studying is good if I'm in class all day Saturdays and in clinicals two evenings a week?:studyowl:

whenever I can fit in time, I'm studying. I cant really plan out a time, because all material is different.

When I started I ask one of my instructors how many hours should I study. She told me to study as if it is a full time job. So if you have 3 hours of class on one day then that day you should study 5 hours. If you have 6 hours on another day then study 2hours on that day so on.... Totaling 40 hours every week. This way you can enjoy some off time without having school burnout. This has worked out for me but everyone is different.

I just finished my second year in a four year program and as the time has progressed in the program I found that there was too much material to "study" it. I found that when I tried to study and learn everything that I didn't retain it and my marks were not as good. So I tried a new method of reading and rereading and rerereading and I made the deans list. There is no way you can know it all but you need to have an overall understanding and often when I read and reread the larger picture becomes much clearer to me. what ever you do don't try to memorize anything...it's useless...way too much stuff. :) One of my profs just told me to keep plodding on....keep trying...you can do it! best advice I have received so far!

i'm starting nursing school on august 27th and i really like the schedule study that you have go by. it makes perfect sense to me and i'm going to try this method and see how it works for me. i'll be working 24 hours a week while in school, so this seems to be totally doable. i also plan on reading the material beforehand that will be covered in class so i'll retain more information. i'm sooo ready to do this! great posting!

wow, I"m amazed at the amount of studying you guys do. I maintain a low A, Hi B average, and am in my 3rd semester of a 6 semester BSN program. I study rarely more than an hour at a time, except running a study group on most Sundays from 3-? usually 5-6pm.. I'm a second degree person, who also works 30+ hrs a week, but yet I still find time to goof off on most weekends. Obviously study time is highly individual and different things work for different folks. Good luck and don't stress too much.

I'm maintaining high A's in all three of my classes this summer, and my schedule is:

M- class 8:30-6, study 9-2 OR go out

T- study 1-6, study 9-2

W- study 1-6, study 9-2

R - class 9-12, study 1-6, study 9-2 OR go out

F- work 10-4, study 9p-1a

Sa - work 10-6, study 9-2

Su - study 11a-2a

Now, my studying is usually done with the TV on, or if I'm on the computer I take breaks and come here or elsewhere, so it's not hard time in the library. I put in about 40 hours/week on top of classes and work. This is a 10-week summer semester though, and we have exams every Monday and Thursday. There might be less to do per week in the fall, or not b/c we throw clinicals into the mix. Just devote all the time that you can, and make sure you take some time for yourself.
