• A dopamine drip is ordered to infuse at 3mcg/Kg/min. The solution is available in 400mg in 250mL D5W. The patient weighs 155lbs. Using a 60gtt/mL set:

your calculation is incorrect. first of all, 3125 units of heparin an hour will cause a person to hemorrhage--it is too much. you failed to include the conversion of minutes to hours and liters to mls in your calculations. u/h=(25000u/1l)x(1l/1000ml)x(1ml x 20gtt)x(15gtt/60min =.3125u/h

by dimensional analysis: 25,000 units/1 liter (dose on hand) x 15 gtts/minute (infusion rate) x 1 ml/20 gtts (drop factor of iv tubing) x 60 minutes/hour (conversion factor) x 1 liter/1000 ml (conversion factor) = 1125 units/hour

check: 1125 units (dose desired)/25,000 units (dose on hand) x 1,000 ml (amount the dose on hand comes in) = 45 ml/hour

45 ml/hour x 20 gtts/ml (drop factor of iv tubing) x 1 hour/60 minutes (conversion factor) = 15 gtts/minute (infusion rate--given in the problem).
