Help at a crossroad??

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hello everyone,

I am a second semester nursing student and at crossroad? I worked hard to get into the nursing program(like all nursing students have) I get good grades, have awsome classmates and good teachers. I am feeling unhappy now a days? don't know why but feel as though maybe this isn't for me anymore. My teachers tell me not to even think of quitting because I am a leader and will be a good nurse. But the reality is I am starting to feel more and more this way and am trying to tell myself it will get better it is just a phase. Is it burnout? stress? I feel I am studying so much and losing myself in all of it. My husband is very supportive and I have no children . I was just diagnosed with prediabetes. So I don't even want to go to class anymore. Any advice ???much appreicated and thanks for listening.:o

I would follow the advice of your instructors and keep plugging away at it until you can decide for sure if it's just a phase, burnout and stress. You might quit and immediately regret it.

But first and foremost take care of your health. If in anyway your health is compromised then it's not worth it.

I can't tell you how many times in my ADN program I doubted if this was truly what I wanted to do. Even afterwards the first year or two. 15 years later, I still wonder what the heck I'm doing. I'm back in a BSN program and day by day want to quit.

Good luck in whatever you do.

I had to respond to your post because a year ago I was in second semester and I posted something very similar to what you said. I hated it so much!! Everyone told me to stick with it and here I am 3 months away from graduation! And you know what....it is still a pain in the butt and it still sucks most of the time (school I mean)! I couldn't let myself come that far and then just quit; neither should you! Nursing school and the real world of nursing are totally different things! I still have doubts about whether this is the right career for me, but if I don't like one area, at least there are other options. That is the beauty of the job, lots of flexibility! You will survive this no matter how crappy it seems right now, so if any part of you still wants to do this, stick it out! Good luck!

Boy it sure is nice to hear from people that don't feel like a bright light came down from the sky and said "thou shall be a nurse" I also question myself daily but am too far in it now to change.

Some days I like being a nurse, somedays I don't.

The one thing I am sure about, is how bad I hated every minute of nursing school. Im proud I made it through, but NEVER again will I endure that type of stress.

Hope you find what you are looking for. I'm still looking

You sound depressed to me. I would seek a doctor's treatment and some counseling, were I you. I don't think it's about your not being "right" for nursing so much as you are overwhelmed and anxious, and it's making you depressed. I have a LOT of experience w/depression, so I can relate. Please, seek help. Remember, one of the classic signs of depression, being unable to find fulfillment or enjoyment in things you did previously. Hope this helps. Hugs.

Thanks you so much!!! I am glad it is just not me who has felt this way. I will take yours and everyone else advice into much thought...thanks again:)
