How about ineffective airway clearance?

As always, think of the most important priority. The first thing that came to mind when i hear choking, i think "airway".

Make a list of this kid's symptoms and the doctor's orders. Try to figure out why the doctor has ordered the things he has and include them as potential symptoms. Take all these actual and potential symptoms and try to group them into two categories that you can tack a nursing diagnosis onto since you need at least 2 nursing diagnoses, right? Here are some ideas for possible nursing diagnoses to give you some ideas of where to go with this. He's going to have post-extraction swelling, so removing secretions is important or he's going to develop pneumonia. Difficulty swallowing is probably a problem as well so don't forget the pain and anxiety that come with that.

  • High Risk for Ineffective airway clearance R/T increased secretions secondary to potential tracheal edema. . .
  • Risk for infection R/T tissue trauma of foreign body in respiratory track and evidenced by. . .
  • Risk for aspiration R/T tissue swelling in respiratory track. . .
  • Pain R/T
  • Anxiety/Fear R/T perception of suffocation secondary to tissue swelling. . .
  • Alteration in comfort R/T difficulty swallowing

Have a nice weekend.
