We are required to wear one in nursing school.

This really depends on where you are working or doing clinicals. I did clinicals in places where we had to have a white coat (community health), and places where white coats were forbidden (psych). The same holds true for once you become a RN - it's going to depend on where you work. In my years as a nurse, I have never worn one.
