I think cutsey scrub tops look ridiculous on adult units

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

The other day a co-worker strolled in wearing a scrub top festooned with furry, smiling teddy bears. On an adult cardiac floor...REALLY? On various adult units I've seen Looney Tunes, Precious Moments, rainbows and clouds, hearts, and yes...oodles and oodles of teddy bears.

I think these types of scrub tops look ridiculous unless you work in peds, in which case they would all be highly appropriate. On one hand nurses are striving to be taken seriously as professionals, yet with the other hand they are taking juvenile looking scrub tops off the hangar.

I'm a guy and pretty much have to wear solid scrubs if I don't want to look like a freak. But I am not motivated out of jealousy to kvetch about print tops on the ladies. If women want to pizazz up their uniforms, I have seen tons of very tasteful, very professional looking print scrub tops coordinated with solid pants.

If I were director of nursing of the world, I would ban dorky print scrub tops.

Okay...talk amongst yourselves.

i also just figured out that op is the "original point." i thought it was another poster's screen name. remind me to continue to ignore the "op."

i thought "op" meant "original poster", or the person who started the thread.

it's pretty much all the same thing.

for example, dh = dear husband/darling husband...

unless the wife is ticked off at him that day, then dh could be...

nevermind, won't go there.:lol2:

Same thing could be said for dw = dear wife/darling wife/ [fill in the blank]. Equal opportunity :D

You shouldn't be bothered with what kind of scrubs people wear. It is the atiitude and professionalism at what these nurses do that should count. Some people may think that you look ridiculous in your plain scrubs and have no sense of being sensative to what others like to wear. Scrubs don't equal professionalism.

Tell that to a judge who shows up for court wearing a clown suit.

Anyone who think how we present ourselves (and that includes what we wear) doesn't influence the first impression we make on others is deluding themselves.

Do am I deluded to believe that I shouldn't be judged by my clothes, but by my character and abilities? And first impressions are made through non-verbal communication not by my fashion choices. I sticking with my cutsy tops, because the only people who complain about about what I look like and thefore pass judgement upon me are so-called nurses!!! so much for "professionalism"! :uhoh3::smokin:

Not deluded to think that you shouldn't be judged on your appearance, but deluded to think that you're not.

I agree, folks should create their first impression of us based on qualities such as competence and our character....but they don't. They base their first impression on our appearance....then hopefully see the rest as time goes on.

Patient's aren't going to say, "Good morning, wow that scrub top looks ridiculous." Fellow health care professionals also aren't going to critique your scrubs to your face, but when they're all dressed as adults, and RN's are wearing Hello Kitty...it's not likely they're going to think, "My she looks professional in that Hello Kitty scrub top." Why start a therapeutic relationship with a patient by having to work uphill and overcome a dicey first impression? Why give the impression that we're less professional than we are? Are juvenile print scrubs that important?

Yes it that important since so many people are passing judgment on me and others just because they don't like what I wear. My cutsy top has become a battle cry for me, if you can't look at an individual and not judge then you are in the wrong profession, and in my opinion failed at life. I don't care if it is clothing, or skin color! But that is just a value I hold my self to. dicey first impression? Well if what I wear is that big of a deal then I would say there will be nothing I don't or say that will make a difference in that person's life, which case all I can do is my job to to best of my abililty and not worry about their fashion opinons. I feel that we are less professional with all this useless bickering about clothing. white vs colors, solids vs prints :uhoh3: Again I have no problem with people saying, " I don't like cutsey tops" it is when you cross then line and say that person is an idiot or unprofessional or what ever else. Who gets to chose what the "professional" nurse gets to look like and how are my tops hindering all of nursing? Guess I don't want to be a professional nurse, I rather be just a nurse-less restrictive!:jester:

:twocents: comparisions to other professions don't apply, lawyers, cops and doctors aren't working with poo, blood and pee! May law enforcement official don't wear uniforms, some doctors where "fun caps" in OR or ER. And having had a relative work at Microsoft for many years and can assure you that there were many days that the Gates came to work without a tie in jeans and sweater! :smokin: Micorsoft is the only plave. Many jobs have a more relax culture. One can be professional, and tops in your field without formality! If you need solid colors and nylons to feel like a professional nurse, great for you. But I needed my degree to feel that way!

Wow!! Talk about the importance of picking one's battles!!

If wearing childish clothing at work is so important to you, I hope for your sake that your place of employment doesn't follow the recent trend of requiring a specific plain color scrub.

Limiting scrubs (which already fit like comfy PJ's) to adult prints is restrictive???? Good thing you went into nursing, you'd hate having to go to work everyday in professional dress.

Childish prints somehow assist an RN in working with poo, blood and pee?

I do just fine with those substances while dressed as an adult.

I used to work in technology and yes, different professions have different standards of dress.....but professionals usually look like adults. That's why RN's generally wear scrubs to work and not jeans and sweater like Bill Gates. Not sure what on earth that has to do with anything.

Now, if you had a picture of Bill Gates coming to work in a Superman shirt....or maybe wearing a Winnie the Pooh sweatshirt, with Tigger sneakers....that would be comparable.

Wow 23 pages...holy moly...I never even thought about what others wear and I don't care to. But c'mon on now, some people on here posting like 5-10 times about this. Let it go.
