Dyeing White Scrubs

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Since my husband and I are in serious money saving mode and the fact that we cannot afford extras right now, I am considering dyeing my white scrubs for my first job until we can afford new ones. Has anyone ever done this? How do they look afterward? Does the color bleed or rub off onto fabric?

It won't work well unless they are 100% cotton. Polyester doesn't take most dyes. I called Rit about this same issue some time back. They basically told me to forget it.

True dat!

Even on 100% cotton scrubs the thread used to sew them up may be 100% polyester or a cotton/poly blend. Either way it won't take color the way the main fabric will. This leaves you with white or barely tinted thread against whatever colour you dyed the scrubs.

Better bet is to hunt aroud thrift stores, charity shops, eBay and CL for used or even NIB scrubs on the cheap.

I know my county has buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook. I found 2 sets of scrubs for $5. But Goodwill (or any other thrift store) is an excellent place to find scrubs for just a few dollars per piece. Good luck!!

I have gotten brand new scrubs in thrift shops for $3-$5. Sometimes you can even get them half priced. Also look in your newspaper for garage sales. You can get a ton of nice scrubs for cheap.

I suppose we could afford to swing a few bucks for the thrift shops. Thanks.
