New Grad Resume

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a new grad and trying to compile my resume and cover letter. The difficulty I'm having is that all my "work experience" has been my academic clinical experience. I'm looking for suggestions on how I should list my clinical placement experience on my resume. I've taken a look through the threads but havent been able to locate a resume with such an example. I'm attempting to apply to a cancer agency. Any suggestions for a cover letter geared for this, would be most helpful. All and any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks in advance! :)

Do a Google search for nursing resume examples and you find that there are plenty of them out there. You will want to list all your clinical rotations. Good luck!

For awhile on my new-grad resume I just had it broken down under a bullet point of

School Clinical Experience

-Med/Surg, 160 hours at St. Whatshisface Memorial

so on and so forth... eventually I took it all out though and only mentioned my preceptorship.

Just make sure it's clearly labelled as school clinicals, so they don't think you're trying to pull a fast one about working.

I'm of the opinion that "work experience" doesn't necessarily mean health care or nursing experience. I had several careers before graduating nursing school, none of which had anything to do with health care, and felt comfortable spinning those jobs and their inherent duties in a way that would inform a potential employer of the type of person I was. Corny, familiar terms and phrases like customer service, strong work ethic, people person, "first one in - last one to leave", team player, and the like, when typed in a comprehensive way or stated in an interview with a straight face or maybe even some enthusiasm, go a long way. Sell yourself and the value of the work experience you've acquired that, along with a calculated and convincing answer to the question about why you became a nurse, will be the foundation for a long, fulfilling career as a dedicated nurse, etc. and so on. I didn't include academic clinical experience on my resume because I don't think it's appropriate - it's part of every nurse's education, and not "work experience".

I used this resume sample as my guide. It worked for me so I hope it helps.
