ITT Technical Institute is seeking NLN accredidation!


I have noticed several posts on the site about NLN/CCNE accreditation and job placement. I posted a question about whether it mattered if a school was accredited by one of the above mentioned accreditation bodies when seeking employment after graduation. Nobody replied. So, I decided to do a little research. I called: Clarian Health, Community Health Network, St. Vincent, and St. Francis to see if the accreditation mattered. All of the mentioned hospital groups with the exception of St. Francis said yes. OK, so that limits a person as far as employment if the person graduates from a program that is not NLN/CCNE accredited.

The reason I started this research is because I was accepted into and attended Harrison College (Formally IBC). When I applied, I understood the school was accredited by the Indiana State Board of Nursing. I figured that was all of the accreditation I needed in order to secure employment after graduating. I learned quickly I was wrong. So, I decided to withdraw from the program. I was told by several administrators that the school was seeking NLN accreditation and that the process was started. That was incorrect information as I checked the NLN site and no the school was not a candidate for NLN accreditation. I decided to pursue a different avenue…I applied to another school for a second BS in Nursing program. I have an interview at the end of this month for a January start cohort. So, I am hoping to get in. We shall see.

I bring this up, not to trash Harrison College, but to inform each person visiting this site that yes, the accreditation plays an integral part in your securing employment after graduation. Furthermore, it plays a part in your ability to further you education. So, I beg everyone to research the school you are interested in attending prior to signing up. There have been several schools staring RN programs in Indianapolis, but only one who is currently seeking NLN accreditation and that is ITT Technical Institute. So, if you feel IVY Tech is too long or you prefer not to go the second BS option, I would highly encourage you to check out ITT Tech!

I currently attend harrison and they are in the process of accredidation. I also checked the website you did and got nervous that they werent listed, so i called the NLN and asked them about it. The reason harrison is not listed is due to the fact they have to have their first visit by the NLN which is scheduled in the spring. ONce they have their first visit and become a candidate, there are other steps to go through before they get the accredidation. (Such as the class ahead of us has to pass their boards with a certain percentage of the class passing) The class that just started at harrison in september should be accredited by the time we graduate. The NLN also told me there was no way they could tell us they are in the proces of being accredited and not be. That would be a huge legal problem for them. Not wanting to discredit your post but the Harrison information is wrong.

Thanks for the response, Shelbell.

I called NLN this morning to verify the information you provided (I would have been upset if the website was incorrect and I freaked out over nothing and withdrew from the program!) Anyways, the person who I spoke to said the website is current and that they have no record of Harrison College applying for accreditation. This should not suggest that Harrison doesn’t plan on doing so. I am only pointing out the fact that as of October 20, 2009, Harrison College is not a candidate for the accreditation.

You are correct in the list of things that need to be done in order to receive full accreditation (i.e. NCLEX pass rates, certain materials made available to students in the labs, ect…) I am not saying anything bad about the school. In fact, I find Mrs. ******* and Mrs. ******* two of the best instructors I have ever had during my academic career. They both are very intelligent, able to communicate difficult material well, and make class fun. If you have either of them, you will have a blast! I just find it interesting that: Brown Mackie College, Med Tech College, Harrison College, and ITT Technical Institute all started new RN programs in the last few years and only one school is on the list for candidacy.

Shel…I will warn you though…watch your back when it comes to administration! Just ask some of the “seniors” in the program. The Dean of General Education and the Dean of Nursing are two you must not reckon with J They absolutely do not like students questioning why certain things are the way they are.

I wonder why they said two different things? From what I understand the program is supposed to have their onsite review this spring and once all the information is verified by the NLN it will receive initial accredidation postdated to the date of the onsite review. I do have Mrs ******* and Mrs ******* and they are awesome instructors!

This is a good discussion that could be very useful to prospective students -- but it's not a good idea to mention specific people by name. Would you want people talking about you by name on a public website?

Anyway ... as to the central issue ... It can make a difference as to whether or not your school is accredited, as the OP has found out. However, if a school is not accredited, it is impossible to tell what will happen in the future. Some schools apply for accreditation fail to meet the requirements. Others change the minds and stop pursuing accreditation. Other schools go on to get accreditation after being in business for a couple of years.

You never know whether they will earn accreditation or not until they actually go through the process. Until that time, attending such a school is a bit of a gamble.
