I am a new grad. Some of my patients who are taking steroids, sometimes get surveillance blood cultures done. I was trying to figure out why, but I cannot seem to connect the two. I always think I'll ask one of the older nurses at work, but then do not have time or forget to.
Thanks!

Bacteria may flourish in immunosuppressed environments. I think this sounds like a waste of money. If I were the doc, I would just watch the white count and temp before randomly ordering blood cultures. I've never heard of such a thing where I work and a lot of my ICU pts are on steroids. I'd be curious to know if your facility has any further rationale or known benefit from this. Also, I'd like to know if it's done for all pts on steroids or if it depends on the reason they're getting steroids. Anyway, hope that helps.
