Pulling meds for other nurses

  1. 0 I am a relatively newly licensed nurse in the state of Florida. I have been told several different sides to the policy of nurses pulling meds for each other. During my orientation, my preceptor or I would pull the meds but the other may actually give the medication. I was then told in a residency class that this was against the medication policy and you are never to give a med that another nurse has pulled from the pyxis. I understand the help that other nurses can be and that this probably happens all the time. My question is what is the actual policy and the legalities behind giving a medication to a patient that you did not physically pull from the pyxis yourself?

As I mentioned in another thread, we MUST pull for floats, registry, and agency because they don't have access. I personally don't like it, but that's the way our process is set up. And I don't have time to administer meds for those I pull for. There's really no reason to pull for another nurse who does have access.
