We use Braun pumps and filtered tubing at our facility. We hang a lot of Mefoxin, but it keeps plugging up our filters requiring a tubing change during the infusion. This results in a loss part of that dose. Because the antibiotic is piggybacked, the primary line has the filter. There is concern that if we eliminate the filter, other issues will arise that the filter is made to prevent (air, etc.). We are changing tubing at least 1-2 times in 24hours on patients on Mefoxin, each time losing a part of that dose. Anyone else having these kind of problems or have a good solution (our pharmacy just shrugs their shoulders).

You hang filtered tubing on all of your patients? That seems like a waste of time and money. Is this a 0.2micron filter? It' purpoe isn't to remove air....it removes particulate/precipitate from the fluid that may occur with infusions like TPN or Mannitol.

But if your facility has decided this is the policy then OK.....I would infuse the Mefoxin into a port post filter.

Why do you use filtered tubing on all of your patients. What is in the main lines?
