Midline
Short peripheral

I'm taking this darn quiz and I just can't find a concrete answer to this with Rocephin.

- Oct 1, '12 by sarakjpI'm just going to throw in my opinion...short peripheral. A 3 day course of IV abx is not a long time, Rocephin doesn't need to be run centrally, and there's a lesser chance of causing a central line infection if it's not being frequently accessed. This is just my 2 cents, please don't take it for fact!RockinChick66 and Carefreeliving like this.
- Oct 2, '12 by RockinChick66Is this a test question? I piggyback it with IVF, sometimes in a peripheral, sometimes a picc. I don't think it really matters! People with picc lines are usually on vanc or something more for long term use of abx.
- Oct 2, '12 by iluvivtRocephin can be run through any these types of lines. My thought is they want you to say midline b/c of the reference to 3 days or more. That word more makes me think they are looking for midline to be the answer. Anything with a ph of less than 5 or greater than 9 is best administered through a central line and the ph of Rocephin is between 6-8 so it could be given through a midline.
We would not place a ML for it though.....we would place a PIV. It is fairly easy on the veins compared to some other antibiotics, I would also get a more definitive time frame and to seek clarification to make certain the abx was not going to be changed or another added to the regime. You do not want to put in a midline for a medication within that acceptable ph range and then have the MD change everything. We rarely use them in the hospital for that reason,,thye are just too limiting and difficult for the RNs to assess.
If it will be 6 days or more of IV therapy we usually place a PICC for venous preservation and provide a secure access. - Oct 2, '12 by iluvivtRocephin can be run through any these types of lines.
