Online Science Courses

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi all,

I thought that maybe it would be good to have a sticky for online science courses.

I am currently looking for an online/distance learning-- 4-- credit microbiology course. Of course it has to have a lab.

I know that both ccconline and Rio Salado offer these courses. Anyone have experience with either one of these in regards to microbiology, i.e. testing, level of difficulty, user friendly technology. I know from experience with Rio that the exams are proctored but how does ccconline deliver their exams?

If you have a link or resources to other colleges offering sciences--please post them here.

Hi!

I took all of my science prereqs that I needed (A&P 1 & 2, micro, as well as statistics) through CCD on CCConline. The classes were very challenging and time consuming, but they are honored at the nursing school I am applying to and were ideal for me since I have a full time job. I didn't apply for scholarships or anything, but the tuition was pretty affordable when I took the classes (last year).

Good luck!

Hi everyone!

I am looking in to CCCOnline for my Micro class and was wondering how receptive your nursing schools were to the thought of an online class? Does CCD just send over a transcript saying I took the course? Or does it specify that its online?

I left a message for the Academic Advisement office in my CC but was wondering if I could get some insight from those who took it.

Thanks!

I took Micro at CCCOnline and my community college accepted it. I sent them the description first and they said that it was acceptable because the course covered what needed to be covered. It is listed on my transcript simply as a Microbiology course taken at a Colorado Community College. No specification as to online or traditional class. hth's

I took it with my home college as Puelblo COmmunity College (extremely easy to work with group of folks.)

THe transcript just says it was Micro w/Lab from Pueblo. I did, however, check with my school before hand so that I wasn't out of luck when I presented the transcript and they wondered why I took a class in Pueblo while living in Massachusetts. Most schools are very receptive to online courses as long as they cover the required material. I would definitely check with your school before spending the money. I heard it got very expensive since I took it.

Hi everyone!

I just found out that my school will accept the CCCOnline Microbiology course, but I was wondering.... from anyone who took the class and lab through that school, how much did everything run you? Between tuition, books and lab kit, it looks like it will be $1000. Is that normal?

I think when I did it a couple of years ago it was more like 800. Still pricey. Try to cut your expenses by borrowing a microscope. Maybe your local high school will let you come in and use one or borrow one over the summer. The one's they sell you are adequate, but not great. You can look on ebay too. Try finding a used or international edition of the book at www.allbookstores.com. I bought the international edition for half the price of the US edition (only difference was soft cover). Remember you will be able to sell your book and if you buy it, your microscope after you finish. The convenience and expedition of my timetable made it worth the expense. If you end up waiting another year to start the nursing program because you didn't get micro in, it is well worth the price to get out working a year earlier.

If you have any questions, you can pm me and I will be glad to help.

Yeah, I am sign up for A&P I for the summer and for the Lab kit, Mircoscope, oil lens, and text books it is going to be $1100!:uhoh3: I couldn't believe how expensive it is in the end! I am looking on ebay for the books but the lab kits and microscope I am getting through athomescience.com.

I think that fotografe has the right idea by borrowing one from a school.

Good Luck!

Hiya! Thanks for responding. I am already in clinical nursing but Micro is a pre-req for Med Surg and the Med Surg curriculum and the Micro curriculum together would be a nightmare. I am taking a nurse externship this summer or I would have taken the summer class in my college for half the price. :angryfire

That is a great idea to ask about borrowing one from a high school. I have a brother in high school and he is uh... pretty well known by his teachers. lol Maybe they will let me. All I need is an oil immersion lens right? They would have that under the chem labs in high school? Did you take the micro class online? I see on Amazon that they have the same textbook is soft cover for half the price.. but I am not sure if its the same edition... I dont want to get caught not being able to do homework because I have the wrong edition. If you did take this course, how many hours were you applying to it each week? Thanks so much!

Punk Rock Mama, Hi I am interested in taking on-line courses through http://www.msvcc.org, and I'm trying to figure out how to start the process. I have already completed my application, and sent in my transcript from Delta State Univ. I have a BSN right now, but not using it at all. I have always wanted to persue my nursing career, and now that my son is 2, I really need to get on the ball. I also work a full time job. I have used up all of my pell grant money from DSU, and have student loans on top of that. Do you know of any other grants out there for single mothers? I don't want to have to pay for another loan. Please help...

amazon.com is cheaper....
