LVN TO RN ONLINE~~ In CALIFORNIA?

Students Online Learning

Published

I wanted to know of anyone who knew if this will ever be approved? Or what I can do to do this. I qork with a couple of RN's who got thier degree from excelsior college a few years back; but now this is not allowed because in California Boards do not think that the weeked clinical is real clinical learning. Why do other states approve it though? I would like information on this. I have been a waiting list since 2004, so in the mean time i finished LVN school and passed boards and still waitingon this junior college to accept me. So does anyone know of a faster way?

HELP!!!

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong..Are they saying that the state of California doesn't approve of, or comply with Excelsior's program in terms of licensing??? If this is the case, that is not cool at all.Is California where you plan on working?

Exactly! California is the only state that does not approve of excelsior college or any online LVN to RN program!! I live in California and really had not planned on moving. What Excelsior college did tell me is that I can go thru the program pass the nclex in another state then work 2 years in a different state and then California would endorse my license.

I did go to Excelsior's site and read under the licensure section that graduates are eligible for licensure by "most" states by examination and endorsement. In other words it would be best to contact the state board of Cali or any state you wish to practice for specifics and clarification of their requirements.Hmph! So much for "nursing shortages"...sure seems like there is always that stop or detour sign up ahead. If other states accept it, why does'nt Cali!*sighs*

That is so freaking crazy!!! The only state causing drama and the thought of having to go through all of that....

They allowed excelsior for a couple years but then california board of nurses decided to take it away. I personally think it is rather ridiculous that they did. I have met several excelsior graduate nurses, and they all seemed well qualified and had no problems working in hospitals.

I don't think California will even endorse an out of state license of an Excelsior student who graduated after a certain date under any circumstance. To be extra sure, call the CA BON, it would be ashamed to go through all that and not be able to practice where you wish to live.

you can do LVN to BSN in CA through Indiana State University. The clinical portion is done through hospital near you, and the Theory is done online at ISU. Approved by CA State Board of Nursing...go to ISU's website!

Yes, Excelsior is out in your state. I have heard of ISU like mentioned and also University of Phoenix LVN to BSN is in CA.

Since this thread is nearly 2 years old, it is highly probable that the original poster might not be actively seeking answers to his/her question anymore.

It is an old post, but the continuing conversation is still very interesting and relevant to LVNs in california.:wink2:

Ive known other LVNs that have gone through Phoenix University and the clinicals are at a hospital near your area. I am currently in the same boat trying to get into RN programs, you would think that my 10 years of LVN experience would help me get in...good grades and all.
